Sunday means different things to many people. To some it means a day of rest, a day to unwind from that dominating boss, a jealous co-worker or from being super mum. I hear some people actually play golf on Sunday, plan a date, go to the office even or like the hard core party people, survive a hangover. These activities are very common in most parts of the world, but not in West Africa, not in Ghana. Sunday to us is separated and dedicated to God, at least the first half of it. You might argue that it is not so and you might win, even though we are predominantly Christians in our beloved Ghana, you will find, people wear that title like a flower crown, so they are not tagged weird and sinner.

Let me be a little more specific, Sunday to us First Lovers is indeed a day for God like every other day is. Haha! We spend all day in church and we love it. It doesn’t mean we don’t feel the heat, or like the other day, the storm that raged as we stood under wobbling canopies. it doesn’t mean we don’t feel our tummy make that troll like sound because it was too early to gobble up anything into our stomachs. No, it doesn’t mean we don’t feel sleepy at times, or want to curl up in our beds as we are surrounded with many people from different backgrounds and temperaments.

Naa, we do and my people will tell you way much more than I just did. But we are lovers and we love God, at least we are trying to and he said he who has his commandment and keeps it, it is him that loves him. Not the one who bears the title Christian, not the emotional worshiper, nor the one whose tongues sound like Greek. And he did command us to feed his sheep, if we love him. So we try to do that, it’s what we hear everyday, some of you even make fun of us. You say we call ourselves Shepherds and Sheep, I’m shaking my head as I type. Anyway, this piece is not for you, another time maybe.

I’m writing about last Sunday and the message that was preached. It was a very hot message and here’s what the preacher said we should do. ‘Turn to your neighbor and tell him FLEE FORNICATION.’ We laughed, we are a happy lot, so get used to our outbursts of laughter, I did turn and said to my neighbor “Flee Fornication” then I chuckled and he asked why, then I said “Free Fornication” Haha! Some people at the back had caught the revelation and were whispering among themselves, then the preacher said ‘I said FLEE FORNICATION NOT FREE FORNICATION,’ and we all laughed. You see it’s this stereotype thing with the Ashanti man, who is known to use L for R and vice versa, anyway it was a good laugh.

I was sitting in front as always and oh! the message was dialing my number as Ghanaians say. Our Daddy always says if the message is talking about you, just smile and laugh and no one will know it is you, so I did that. I’ve been thinking about it all week and I wanted to share what struck me about the message.

Ephesians 5:3 says But fornication, and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not once be named among you as becometh saints;

Neither filthiness, or foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. it goes on to say such people will not inherit the kingdom of God.

I know many focus on the key word fornication, and the self righteous ones think, oh I’m no fornicator, my hymen is still intact, or I only do porn and masturbation, Oh no! you’ve gotten it all wrong. The bible says all uncleanness and if you have a Dakes bible, it refers to uncleanness as works of the flesh, which it goes on further to list as:

Adultery, we all know what that means.

Uncleanness: whatever is opposite of purity, including sodomy, homosexuality, lesbianism, pederasty, bestiality, and all other forms of sexual perversion.

Lasciviousness: Lasciviousness blew me away, because it is subtle and we all do it without needing any skill. It simply means the promoting and partaking of that which leads to produce lewd emotions, anything tending to foster sex sin and lust. Dakes bible says that is why many worldly pleasures have to be avoided by Christians so that lasciviousness may not be committed. Can you think of any lascivious activities you do you know leads to sex and lust? I can think of one right now, music, porn, dirty talking, sexting. Don’t look at me like you don’t do them, we all do them.

The list goes on and on, Idolatry, Hatred, Witchcraft, Variance, Emulations, Wrath, Drunkenness, it’s amazing. It’s not just for a special group of fornicator. In fact, if you want to use God’s definition of who a fornicator is, we will all be fornicators because we have all looked at people and lusted after them. We have undressed them without them taking one piece of their clothing off. We have known them daily, they walk about freely, but yet they are trapped in our minds. Thank God people cannot lose their virginity or get pregnant by mind fornicators, there’ll be plenty of those walking around, wondering, when? how?

My concern as a human being is for people who say they follow Christ, there are serious consequences for doing all these things, it’s not just the STDs, the unwanted babies, the budget you have to make to have safe sex, it’s more than that. So the preacher man taught us, with the bible and one of the reasons struck me, it scared me, it haunted me, it’s still haunting me.

The preacher man said ‘turn your bible to Proverbs 6:32, what does it say?’

But whoso commiteth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it DESTROYETH his own soul.

If that doesn’t scare you, then you are the reason I’m writing this. First the wisest King who ever lived said he who commits adultery lacks understanding. Understanding means mental process of a person who comprehends; comprehension; personal interpretation. You don’t comprehend, cannot comprehend the implications, what it does to your soul, it means you’re not smart, you’re like the mad man of Gadara who takes stones and cuts himself with it, you are destroying your soul.

You see, the preacher man explained that your soul is your EMOTION, your WILL, your intellect. You are destroying your emotion, your ability to feel guilty. This is what came to my mind immediately because I have experienced it first hand. When you sin at first, you feel guilty but then as time comes and go, you stop feeling, you stop feeling I repeat, that’s your conscience being seared right there. You look forward to the next sin, it doesn’t repulse you, you stop thinking about how God is watching you, you get the picture right?

Then the part that really scared me, you destroy your will, you will to say no. Who wants to be the person who cannot say no to anything. When we don’t like something, when we don’t want something like food you utterly hate, we are quick to say no.

People, when you fornicate and are unclean, you lose that will. You cannot control your urges no more, you’re like a field slave who cannot say no to work and lashes, you’re worse than the unsullied to his master. You have no will, simply put. You’re a prisoner in your own body. I cannot begin to tell  you about prisoners and how it sucks being one, you need to go to Nsawam and can get a good picture of yourself.

I sat at the front row, thinking of how many times I had lost my will, then regained it and then lost it. Dude!! Just FLEE!!. I like how the bible didn’t say, walk away or stand firm when fornication comes or speak in tongues, casting out devils when you see that boob fall out or that torso you have been dreaming of or that inviting link on your screen. Flee, it simply means, to run away, as from danger, or pursuers, take flight or to move swiftly; fly; speed. Trust the bible, God knows you may not stand and to many of you who mercy has found you and you were in the sight of temptation and you were able to leave not scarred, mercy, it is only mercy. Do not stand on the highway and say no car will hit me, eventually one will.

There, I hope this gets you thinking and doing the right thing. I believe strongly and I know that sin is pleasurable, who ever said sex is not sweet, or talking dirty to that person isn’t? Oh yes! and many of us are good at it too. But let me leave you with this, Jesus loved his Father more than the pleasures of sin. You cannot say you love God and disobey him on this one, no! no!! Let’s stop saying that, you hurt God.

Fornication isn’t free Love, you’ll pay for it, with your life, your soul, your body and with your right standing with God, think about it please.

Now before I go, you’re probably saying Miss Stitch, you don’t know me or my history, you don’t know what I have done. A pastor once said to me if you can’t beat sleeping with a cow, then you are not that bad, but even if you have slept with an animal before, there is hope for you in the blood of Jesus. There’s nothing that blood cannot wash away.

My shepherd taught me about desire, he said ‘at the root of everything is desire.’ You have to first desire to be pure. My shepherd also led me to this scripture and it has changed my view of my life.

Philippians 2:13 For it is God that worketh in you both to Will and to Do of his good pleasure. There’s a reason why Will was put before Do I was taught. You have to first have a will, before you can do. Will means expressing DESIRE, consent or willingness. Work on your desire, pray about desire, it is God that puts it in you and then he will give you the ability to do. God’s word never lies, you can be free and pure again. I believe it, do you?
